Taipei, Feb. 9 (CNA) The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) on Tuesday announced that a ban on inpatient visits at hospitals in Taipei, New Taipei and Taoyuan in northern Taiwan will be lifted the following day.
The ban came into effect on Jan. 27 in the wake of a COVID-19 cluster infection that started at Taoyuan General Hospital on Jan. 12 and has resulted in 21 locally transmitted COVID-19 cases.
In a press release, the CECC said the decision to lift the ban came after the risk of community infection caused by the cluster has been determined "low" following a series of measures put forth by the center to stop the cluster infection from spiraling out of control.
From Wednesday, hospitals in these areas will allow visits to inpatients, although such visitors will be required to wear face masks at all times and practice good hygiene throughout their visits, the center said.
According to the CECC, a patient can be only accompanied by one individual who cares for her/him, such as a caretaker or family member, and visitors can only visit the patients once a day at a specific time.
Each patient can only have up to two visitors per visit, the center added.
Visitors should also observe COVID-19 prevention measures put forth by the individual hospitals and provide their names and phone numbers to any hospital they visit, the center added.
As part of efforts to contain the infection, a total of 2,135 employees at the Taoyuan hospital received COVID-19 tests from Feb.3-5, all of which were negative, according to Minister of Health and Welfare Chen Shih-chung (陳時中), who heads the center.
As of Monday, 4,345 people have been placed under quarantine, CECC data shows.
