Taipei, Jan. 29 (CNA) Taiwan reported four new imported cases of COVID-19 on Friday, with three of the infected individuals arriving in Taiwan from the Philippines and one coming from South Africa, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
All four individuals had proof of a negative COVID-19 test result issued within three days of their flights to Taiwan, as required, the center said in a statement.
The three from the Philippines were all female migrant workers in their 30s who arrived in Taiwan on Jan. 14 and went directly into quarantine at a government-designated facility.
The Philippine nationals had COVID-19 tests at the end of their quarantine period on Wednesday and the results came back positive two days later even though they have been asymptomatic so far, the center said.
No contact tracing was needed as the three had not come in contact with anyone during the time they have been in Taiwan, the CECC said.
The case from South Africa involved a Taiwanese national in his 60s who visited the country in October 2020 and returned home on Jan. 12, according to the center.
While in home quarantine, the man developed a cough, nasal congestion and a sore throat on Jan. 19, which he treated on his own with medicine, the center said.
The man reported his symptoms to local health authorities on Jan. 24 but didn't seek medical attention because his symptoms showed signs of easing, the center said.
He was tested for the virus upon completing his quarantine on Wednesday and the result came back positive Friday, the center said.
According to the CECC, health authorities traced one contact in the case -- a family member who lives in the same building where the infected man resides, but on a different floor.
The contact has been required to observe self-health management protocols, CECC said.
To date, Taiwan has reported 899 cases of COVID-19, of which 789 have been classified as imported.
Of the total, seven patients have died, 813 have recovered and 79 remain in hospitals receiving treatment, according to CECC.
Since the onset of the pandemic, COVID-19 has infected about 101.36 million people in 193 countries and regions worldwide, with more than 2.19 million fatalities, according to CECC statistics as of Friday.
