Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has painted a grim picture of the coronavirus situation in England barely a day after he imposed the third national lockdown on the country.

Addressing a press conference in Downing Street on Tuesday (January 05), the PM said more than a million people are currently infected with Covid-19 in England alone.

As is customary during the pandemic, Johnson did not speak about the situation in the UK's other constituent nations, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The PM admitted that the new and potent coronavirus variant – popularly referred to as the "British Virus" – is "taking off" in areas outside the capital London and the south east of England.

The PM's press conference took place against the backdrop of more grim statistics as it was announced earlier that another 60,916 people in the UK have tested positive for Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, the first time the daily rates have exceeded 60,000.

In addition, a further 830 people have died of Covid-19 and related complications in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of people who have died of coronavirus in the UK to 76,305.

Looking ahead, Johnson said that by the middle of February there will be a "prospect" of relaxing some of the lockdown measures, subject to "caveats".
