Taipei, Jan. 4 (CNA) Taiwan confirmed three new imported cases of COVID-19 on Monday, one each from the Philippines, the Dominican Republic and France, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
One of the new cases was that of a Filipina migrant worker who arrived in Taiwan on Dec. 10 and had presented a negative COVID-19 report three days prior to boarding her flight, CECC spokesman Chuang Jen-hsiang (莊人祥) said at a press event in Taipei.
The woman, in her 30s, tested negative again for the disease before her mandatory 14-day quarantine ended on Dec. 23 and was in her workplace dormitory for seven days, observing self-health management, as required, Chuang said.
In a third COVID-19 test on Jan. 1, arranged by her employer, she was found to be infected, but her CT level was 33, which led health authorities to believe that she had been infected quite a while ago in the Philippines, Chuang said.
A caretaker who came in contact with her at the dormitory is now in home quarantine, the CECC spokesman said.
He said the second case was that of is a Taiwanese woman in her 20s, who had been in the Dominican Republic since February 2020 and returned on Jan. 1 without any COVID-19 symptoms, the CECC said.
On arrival in Taiwan, authorities at the airport ordered a COVID-19 test for her, as the one that she presented appeared to have some flaws, Chuang said, adding that her results came back positive on Monday.
The one passenger who sat closest to her on the plane to Taiwan is currently in home quarantine, he said.
Meanwhile, the third case was that of another Taiwanese woman, in her 40s, who returned from France on Jan. 1 with no symptoms of COVID-19, Chuang said.
According to Chuang, authorities arranged a COVID-19 test for her on Jan. 2, after she asked to attend a funeral before the end of her mandatory 14-day home quarantine, and the results on Monday were positive.
The five people who were seated closest to her on the flight to Taiwan, as well as two others who came into contact with her at her residence, have been asked to remain in home quarantine, Chuang said.
To date, Taiwan has recorded 815 cases of COVID-19, with 720 classified as imported. Of the total, 696 patients have recovered, seven have died and 112 are in hospital, CECC data shows.
