Labor Party leader, Keir Starmer, has taken the initiative on the spiraling Covid-19 crisis by urging the government to "impose" a new national lockdown "within 24 hours".

In trying to apply maximum pressure on Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, Starmer claimed the virus is "clearly out of control", thus necessitating national restrictions as "the first step".

"It's no good the prime minister [Boris Johnson] hinting that further restrictions are coming into place in a week or two or three. That delay has been the source of so many problems", the Labor leader proclaimed.

"So I say bring in those restrictions now, national restrictions within the next 24 hours. That has to be the first step to controlling the virus", he added.

Starmer's urgent intervention come on the heels of the relentless spread of the new potent coronavirus variant, popularly referred to as the "British Virus".

The new Covid-19 variant – which originated in London and the southeast of England – is widely believed to be responsible for the dramatic rise of coronavirus infections in recent days.

On Sunday (January 03), it was announced that another 54,990 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in the UK, the sixth day in a row that new daily cases have exceeded 50,000.

A further 454 Covid-19 related deaths were registered on Sunday (January 03).
