Taipei, Jan. 1 (CNA) Taiwan reported three additional imported cases of COVID-19 on Friday, bringing the total of confirmed cases in the country to 802 since the epidemic began, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
Two of the cases involved Indonesian fishing crew workers in their 20s who arrived in Taiwan on Dec. 17, said Lo Yi-chun (羅一鈞), deputy chief of the CECC's medical response division, at a press briefing.
The two presented certificates of negative tests done in three days
before boarding their flights to Taiwan and showed no COVID-19 symptoms during their 14-day mandatory quarantine, Lo said.
They took a test on Dec. 30 before the end of their quarantine, and the tests confirmed on Friday that they contracted COVID-19, Lo said, but noted they remain asymptomatic.
Since the two Indonesian migrant workers did not make contact with others during their quarantine, no other people will have to be traced.
The other case Friday involved a Taiwanese national who was a long-time resident of the United States and came back to Taiwan on Dec. 26, Lo said.
The Taiwanese man, in his 20s, also presented a certificate of a negative test before boarding his flight to Taiwan, according to the CECC.
During his home quarantine, the man developed a fever on Dec. 29, and went to a hospital for treatment and took a test that day, Lo said, with the result coming back positive on Friday.
Lo said that because hospital personnel who made contact with the man were well protected, neither will have to be traced.
As of Friday, Taiwan had recorded 802 cases of COVID-19, 707 of which have been classified as imported. Of the total, 682 have recovered, 113 are hospitalized and seven have died, CECC data shows.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, COVID-19 has infected about 83.37 million people in 191 countries and regions worldwide, with more than 1.82 million fatalities, according to CECC statistics as of Friday.
