Taipei, Dec. 30 (CNA) A Taiwanese teenager who returned from the United Kingdom on Sunday has been confirmed to be infected with a new variant of the COVID-19 virus that was detected in the U.K., the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) said Wednesday.
The boy had a fever when he landed on Sunday and was immediately sent to the hospital, and he was confirmed to have COVID-19 a day later, said Health and Welfare Minister Chen Shih-chung (陳時中), who heads the CECC.
He is currently receiving treatment in a hospital and is in stable condition, Chen said.
In response to the case, Taiwan will be tightening quarantine and border control measures from Jan. 1, 2021, Chen said.
