Taipei, Nov. 26 (CNA) Two additional imported COVID-19 cases were reported in Taiwan on Thursday, boosting the number of total cases to 625 in the country since the pandemic broke out at the end of last year, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
One of the two new cases involved a Taiwanese man in his 20s who returned to Taiwan on Nov. 24 from school in the United States in late August, began showing symptoms on Nov. 20, CECC spokesman Chuang Jen-hsiang (莊人祥) told reporters.
Upon arriving in Taiwan, he was tested at the airport, Chuang said, and was confirmed to have contracted COVID-19 on Thursday, Chuang added.
Chuang said the CECC has traced 18 of the people who were on the flight with the man, including five sitting in the rows immediately ahead and behind the man, who have been placed in home quarantine, while the 13 others were flight crew members who are conducting self-health management.
The other case involved an Indonesian woman in her 50s who came to Taiwan on Nov. 9 to visit friends and deal with personal affairs, and was asymptomatic when she arrived at the airport, Chuang said.
However, she started to show symptoms on Nov. 22, Chuang went on. He said the woman was tested on Nov. 24 after her quarantine ended, and was confirmed to be positive for COVID-19 Thursday.
Chuang said the CECC has traced seven people who had contact with the woman, including a cleaner at the quarantine hotel where the woman stayed.
The hotel worker and three of the Indonesian woman's friends have been placed in home quarantine, while three others who had brief contact with the woman, have been put under self-management, Chuang said.
Chuang said the health authorities will launch an investigation as to why the woman failed to report her symptoms during her quarantine.
To date, Taiwan has recorded 625 cases of COVID-19, 533 of which have been classified as imported. Of the total, 555 patients have recovered, seven have died and 63 are currently hospitalized, according to CECC statistics as of Thursday.
