Taipei, Nov. 15 (CNA) Two new imported cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in Taiwan on Sunday, bringing the total number in the country to 602 since the outbreak began at the end of last year, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) said.

One of the cases was a Taiwanese woman in her 40s who lives in Japan and returned to Taiwan Nov. 12, said CECC spokesman Chuang Jen-hsiang (莊人祥) at a press briefing in Taipei on Sunday.

While in Japan, she developed some flu-like symptoms in early November, but she did not see a doctor, as the symptoms subsided with the use of over-the-counter medicine, Chuang said.

Upon arrival in Taiwan, the woman told health authorities of her symptoms and was tested for COVID-19 at the airport before she went into mandatory quarantine, he said.

The results came back positive Sunday, and the patient is now in hospital, Chuang said.

Three people -- two family members and another passenger who sat near her on the flight from Japan -- have been asked to self-isolate, Chuang said.

The other case is a Taiwanese woman in her 30s who lives in the United States and returned to Taiwan Nov. 13, he said.

The woman told health authorities in Taiwan that she became aware of a diminished sense of taste and smell when she was boarding her flight in the U.S., Chuang said.

The patient was tested before she entered quarantine, and the results on Sunday were positive for COVID-19, Chuang said.

Four people who sat near her on the flight to Taiwan, including a relative, have been asked to self-isolate, he said.

Chung said the number of COVID-19 cases in Taiwan over the past 7 days has been the highest since April.

"Nineteen imported cases were recorded in Taiwan in the one-week period Nov. 2-8, which was the highest weekly number since April, but we have had 25 cases in the week Nov. 7-15," he said.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 602 cases of COVID-19, with 510 classified as imported. Of the total, 536 patients have recovered, seven have died, and 59 are in hospital, according to CECC data. Taiwan has not had a confirmed domestic infection since April 12, the data shows.
