Taipei, Oct. 31 (CNA) A 60-year-old Taiwanese man returning after working in India was confirmed to be the latest COVID-19 case recorded in Taiwan, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) said Saturday.
The patient, who traveled to India in February, developed symptoms around Oct. 24 and reported them to the health authorities at the airport upon his return to Taiwan on Oct. 28, CECC spokesman Chuang Jen-hsiang (莊人祥) said at a press briefing in Taipei.
The man was tested positive for COVID-19 and sent to a hospital.
Eight other passengers sitting close to the patient during the flight are being monitored in 14-day quarantine as is mandatory for all arrivals entering Taiwan, the spokesman said.
Three crew members on the same flight operated by a foreign carrier currently in Taiwan are also in quarantine, while eight of their colleagues left Taiwan on the same plane, according to Chuang.
The CECC will inform its counterpart in the country or region the flight departed from about the latest case, Chuang made clear.
The newly confirmed patient pushed the number of total COVID-19 infections in Taiwan since the outbreak began late last year to 555. Of the total, seven have died, 515 have recovered, while 33 remain hospitalized, according to the CECC.
