Taipei, Oct. 22 (CNA) Taiwan confirmed four new imported cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, two of them from Indonesia and one each from the Philippines and Turkey, bringing the total number in the country to 548, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
The four new patients are a Taiwanese man and three foreign women, CECC spokesman Chuang Jen-hsiang (莊人祥) said at a press briefing.
One of the new patients is an Indonesian woman in her 30s who tested negative for COVID-19 three days before she arrived in Taiwan Oct. 14 to work, he said. The woman showed no symptoms on arrival but began experiencing dizziness, loss of appetite, vomiting and exhaustion on Oct. 17 while she was in quarantine, according to Chuang.
The health authorities then arranged for her to take a COVID-19 test on Oct. 20, and the results came back positive Thursday, he said. The woman had no contact with others because she was in a designated quarantine center two days before she developed COVID-19 symptoms and she was hospitalized after she tested positive, Chuang said.
In one of the other cases, a Taiwanese man in his 30s who went to the Philippines to work in December 2019 began experiencing symptoms of joint pains, a cough and loss of smell on Oct. 13-17 but did not seek medical attention, according to Chuang.
He flew back to Taiwan on Oct. 20 and was tested for COVID-19 after he reported his symptoms to health officials, Chuang said, adding that the results came back positive Thursday.
Seven people who sat near the man on the flight to Taiwan have been contacted and asked to remain in home isolation, according to Chuang.
The third patient is an Indonesian woman in her 30s who entered Taiwan Oct. 8 for work purposes and had no COVID-19 symptoms on arrival, but was tested the day before her 14-day quarantine was due to end, in line with the regulation for arrivals from her country, and the results were positive, Chuang said.
The other case was a Filipino woman in her 30s, who had been working in Turkey for the past two years and arrived in Taiwan Oct. 13 for work purposes, carrying proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken at least three days before, he said.
She had no COVID-19 symptoms on arrival but while in quarantine, she was tested after she developed a runny nose, exhaustion and loss of smell Oct. 17-20, and the results Thursday were positive, Chuang said.
To date, Taiwan has recorded 548 cases of COVID-19, with 456 classified as imported. Of the total, 497 have recovered, seven have died and 44 are in the hospital, according to CECC data.
