Tokyo, September 23, 2020, SPA -- Tokyo confirmed Wednesday an additional 59 coronavirus infections, marking the lowest daily figure in nearly three months, as the government has in recent days eased restrictions on social and business activities, Kyodo News reported.
The number was down from 88 reported on Tuesday and 98 on Monday, and the lowest since June 30 when 54 cases were reported.
Since mid-August, the number of new cases of the novel coronavirus in Tokyo has been trending downward after daily increases of 300 to 400 earlier, including a record 472 on Aug. 1.
The Tokyo metropolitan government has downgraded its coronavirus alert to the second-highest of four levels, meaning "vigilance against a resurgence of the virus is needed."
The capital's cumulative total now stands at 24,453 and remains the highest by far among Japan's 47 prefectures.
