With the nucleic acid testing scheme in Hong Kong now in full swing, another 89 medical staffers from Chinese mainland arrived Wednesday night in Hong Kong to assist with the ongoing testing program, for which nearly 800,000 residents have registered.
Their arrival comes at a time when Hong Kong needs them most, as more people are registering to take the nucleic acid test.
Of the 89 members, 51 are from South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and 38 from East China's Fujian Province. Together with the members who arrived in Hong Kong since the beginning of August, there are currently more than 300 staff from mainland cities in Hong Kong.
Liu Juan, executive vice president of the Hong Kong Guangxi As-sociation of Societies, said, "When Hong Kong residents needed help the most, the mainland nucleic acid testing support team came to Hong Kong. All walks of life are very grateful."
In the first two days of the universal community testing program, a total of 278,000 people were sampled and tested at 141 testing centers in Hong Kong, and 82 out of 144 testing centers were fully booked on Wednesday.
Secretary for the Civil Service Patrick Nip Tak-kuen had said that the number of appointments will gradually increase and some testing centers will increase their testing capacity on Thursday to meet demand.
The SAR government will consider whether to extend the testing program by seven days or just extend the dates for some individ-ual testing centers, he said.
