Taipei, Aug. 19 (CNA) New and current international students enrolled in elementary and secondary schools in Taiwan will be allowed to enter the country with immediate effect, the Ministry of Education (MOE) said Wednesday, as Taiwan further eased its border restrictions.
The restrictions, which were imposed in March as part of Taiwan's COVID-19 pandemic response, are being lifted in phases, with the latest change addressing the entry of foreign students below university level.
According to MOE data, that covers 2,532 students, including 974 from Vietnam, 963 from Indonesia, and 206 from China.
On arrival in Taiwan, the new and current students will be given a free PCR test for COVID-19 and will be required to quarantine for 14 days in a government-designated facility, the education ministry said.
Meanwhile, the entry regulations pertaining to students at university level remain unchanged from Aug. 5, when Taiwan decided to allow the return of all current international students, with the exception of those from China, who had been stranded overseas due to the border restrictions.
Prior to August, Taiwan relaxed its rules on June 17 for the reentry of final year international students from 19 countries and territories classified as low-risk or low-to-moderate risk for COVID-19. Almost five weeks later, the entry ban was further eased to allow the entry of new students from those 19 places and final year students from all other countries, including China.
New university students from countries other than the 19 listed by the government are still not permitted to enter Taiwan.
