Brazil on Tuesday reported 1,282 new deaths from the novel coronavirus in the last 24 hours, taking its total such deaths to 45,241, said the health ministry.
The number of infections reached 923,189 after 34,918 more people tested positive for the virus, the largest single-day increase since Brazil's first COVID-19 death was reported three months ago, the ministry said in its daily report.
These latest figures come amid a push to relax lockdown measures and resume economic activity. The city of Rio de Janeiro, for example, has decided to restart competitive sports, such as football, but without an audience.
As Latin America's largest and most populous country, Brazil has the world's second-largest COVID-19 outbreak after the United States.
The southeast state of Sao Paulo is the epicenter of Brazil's outbreak, with 190,285 cases of infection and 11,132 deaths.
