Chile's Health Ministry on Monday reported a total of 138,846 people have tested positive for COVID-19, and 2,264 people have died from the disease.

The country saw a single-day increase of 4,696 new cases of infection in the previous 24 hours, and 74 more deaths.

Most of the new cases, or 4,237, showed symptoms and 459 were asymptomatic while some 24,334 cases remain active or are under treatment, with 1,333 patients on ventilators, including 380 in critical condition.

According to the ministry, 321 ventilators are still available.

In the previous 24-hour period, the health system has carried out 20,040 tests for COVID-19, bringing the total to 728,815 since testing got underway in March.

Chile is in a "very delicate" situation "due to the evolution of the pandemic," Health Minister Jaime Manalich said.

Addressing the record 653 COVID-19 fatalities announced on Sunday, Manalich said the sudden rise in the death toll was due to a change in the way the deaths were being compiled.

Chile's outbreak expanded in May, with an exponential increase in the numbers of infections and deaths. The capital and other hard-hit areas remain in lockdown.
