Officials in charge of anti-epidemic work in Harbin, capital of Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, have been criticized for failing to control the spread of COVID-19 following recent clusters of infections. The province had previously gone consecutive 29 days without new infections.
While the overall anti-epidemic situation in China has been under control and achieved phased victory, Harbin has reported clustered infections, which shows that the city is failing to fulfill its responsibility, Wang Wentao, the governor of Heilongjiang Province, said on Wednesday afternoon.
Officials from Harbin were accused of "numb thinking, war-weariness and a hope-for-the-best mindset", which fully showed that their control measures were poorly implemented and loopholes were evident.
The city currently has a total of 23 confirmed infections and 16 asymptomatic infections, the provincial health authority reported on Thursday. On Wednesday, Heilongjiang reported four newly confirmed patients and 11 new asymptomatic infections, all of whom are from Harbin.
Since April 9, when Harbin reported new confirmed infections, clustered COVID-19 infections have frequently been reported. Before that, the province had reported zero domestic infections for 29 consecutive days.
According to the local health authority, COVID-19 infections have been seen among family members and relatives in recent days. Infections were also found when some residents dined together and in hospitals, resulting in medical staff and other inpatients becoming infected.
