Date: 26/02/2020

The sci-tech research institutes of the DPRK are now giving priority to developing antiviral medicines in order to take prompt measures in case a patient infected with COVID-19 is spotted in the country.

Competent researchers selected in the medicobiological institute and the pharmaceutical institute under the Academy of Medical Science are stepping up the development of antiviral medicines.

The State Microbiological Inspection Agency made clear that a broad-spectrum antiviral injection developed by the bioengineering branch under the State Academy of Sciences passed the nontoxic test.

The pharmaceutical faculty of Pyongyang University of Medical Science developed a new cold gel conducive to preventing flu, avian flu and corona viruses and carried out clinical examinations.

Researchers of the Koryo Medicine General Hospital are directing efforts to developing garlic-mugwort cold aerosol, an antiviral Koryo medicine, and intensifying their study to make effective use of antiviral elements from such Koryo medicinal herbs as sachalin knotweed, rhubarb and leishan snake gourd.

A vigorous campaign is also in full swing to further enhance the efficacy of existing antiviral medicines, including ribonucleic acid injection, burdock antiviral solution and interferon tablets.

Researchers of the State Academy of Sciences established a test method suited to the actual conditions to help those units, which quarantined the travellers from foreign countries, those who have made contacts with them and patients suffering from cold and acute respiratory diseases, make medical observation of them more carefully.

Meanwhile, they are rapidly compiling and distributing references and technical directions related to the epidemic, based on the general analysis of research findings in other countries.
