The UN does not recommend any travel and trade restrictions based on current information at this time, UN resident coordinator in China Nicholas Rosellini told the Global Times, in responding to the question about some countries issuing a ban on Chinese entry amid the coronavirus outbreak.
Under international health regulations, countries implementing measures which significantly disrupt international travel or trade are required to provide WHO with their public health rationale within 48 hours, UN China said on Wednesday.
Rosellini said that the United Nations family is following the latest guidance issued by WHO, on how countries should deal with imported cases, and the WHO and wider UN family are working actively with governments and experts around the world to support its implementation.
"In implementing travel and trade measures, countries must consider national policies, their own risk assessment, and capacity considerations," he said.
Currently, several countries, such as the US and Australia, have already banned Chinese entry, and while one cannot blame them for their actions in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, they set a poor example to other countries.
As the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said: "At this time of heightened anxiety, we must avoid stigma and discrimination, and stand together in solidarity and compassion."
