US Democratic National Committee Network Hacked

by Wayne Lee June 14, 2016

The U.S. Democratic National Committee (DNC) said Tuesday its computer network was breached by Russian government hackers who gained access to opposition information on presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

DNC chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz described the incident as "serious" and said the committee moved quickly to "kick out the intruders and secure our network" with the help of a cyber company called CrowdStrike.

The hacking incident, first reported by The Washington Post, does not appear to have yielded financial or personal information, said the DNC. The paper, citing committee officials and security expects, said the hackers had access to all emails and chat exchanges and to the DNC network for about a year.

The top Democrat on the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee, Adam Schiff, said Tuesday he would not elaborate on the incident, but that Russian targeting should be expected.

"While I cannot get into the specifics of any one attack or hack, in light of our increasingly adversarial relationship with Russia after their invasion of Ukraine, we must expect that Russia, in particular, will target our institutions relentlessly - and for those that are not well defended, successfully," Schiff said in a statement.

A Russian embassy spokesman told the The Washington Post he had no knowledge of the breach.
