Uganda Convicts Mastermind in 2010 Bombing
by VOA News May 26, 2016
A Ugandan court has convicted the mastermind of the twin bombings that killed 76 people in the capital, Kampala, in July 2010.
Judge Alphonse Owiny Dollo said Issa Luyima was shown to have played a significant role in planning the attacks. He was convicted Thursday on charges of terrorism.
Luyima was one of 13 men who faced multiple charges related to the attack. They included seven Kenyans, five Ugandans and one Tanzanian.
So far two have been found guilty, while the rest are awaiting verdicts.
The Somali insurgent group al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the suicide bombings, which targeted viewers who had gathered to watch the 2010 World Cup final at a restaurant and a rugby club in the capital.
The group said the attack was revenge for Uganda's role in the African Union peacekeeping force that is helping the Somali government battle al-Shabab extremists.
