Official denies ISIL approaching Iran borders
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Kermanshah, Oct 8, IRNA -- General Director of Political and Security Affairs of Kermanshah Governor Generals Office on Wednesday rejected reports about movement of the terrorist group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) toward Irans borders.
Talking to IRNA, he said that ISIL is not close to Irans borders and that its rebels are far from the Khanaqin region.
Khanaqin is an Iraqi city, 12 kilometers east of Irans border. It is the administrative capital of the Khanaqin District, which comprises several cities, such as As-Sadiyah and Jalula, as well as hundreds of villages.
On June 10, the Tekfiri militants gained control of Mosul, the capital of Iraq's Nineveh Province, which was followed by the fall of Tikrit, located 140 kilometers (87 miles) northwest of Baghdad.
Over the past few weeks, Iraqi armed forces have been engaged in fierce clashes with the terrorists, who have threatened to take their acts of violence to other Iraqi cities, including the capital.
However, their advance has been slowed down as Iraqi military forces and volunteer fighters have begun engaging them on several fronts, pushing the militants out of several areas.
