MOSCOW, August 18 (RIA Novosti) – US authorities have imposed sanctions on two key members of Islamic State (IS) and Jabhat al-Nusra military groups, the US Department of the Treasury said on its website.
The sanctions were introduced against an IS representative Abu Mohammed al-Adnani and a representative of Jabhat al-Nusra group, Said Arif. The sanctions include a ban on entry into the United States, as well as the freezing of their assets in the country in case they exist. The US citizens and companies are prohibited from engaging in any kind of activity with these individuals.
On August 16, the UN Security Council imposed sanctions on six key persons involved in the IS group and Jabhat al-Nusra, which also hit Abu Mohammed al-Adnani and Said Arif. The UN resolution obliges all countries to prevent any terrorist financing, recruitment into their ranks, the supply of weapons, and also warns that any economic activity in the regions of Iraq and Syria controlled by the terrorists may lead to sanctions of the international community.
The Islamic State, formerly known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS), is a Sunni group that has been fighting in Syria against the country's president, Bashar Assad, and launched an offensive in Iraq in June. Later that month, the radicals announced that they established a caliphate on the territory they control forcing hundreds of thousands, including ethnic and religious minorities, to flee.
