Third Tsarnaev Friend Indicted Over Boston Bombings

August 30, 2013

A friend of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has been indicted for allegedly making false statements to investigators.

Robel Phillipos, 19, is one of three young men accused of removing a backpack and a laptop from Tsarnaev's room in the days after the April 15 bombings that killed three people and injured some 260 others.

According to the indictment, Phillipos is accused of concealing his actions during interviews with investigators.

He faces up to 16 years in prison if convicted.

Kazakh citizens Dias Kadyrbayev and Azamat Tazhayakov have already pleaded not guilty.

The three suspects and Tsarnaev knew each other while studying at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth.

Tsarnaev, 20, is facing trial. His brother Tamerlan, also suspected of carrying out the bombings, was killed in a shootout with police.
