One of the chief suspects of the London attack, in which British soldier Lee Rigby was beheaded by two assailants, has appeared in court in handcuffs.

The 22-year-old Michael Adebowale appeared at Westminster magistrates court under high levels of security, including a police helicopter hovering over the court in central London.

Adebowale is charged with murder and possessing a 9.44 millimetre KNIL model 91 revolver with intent to cause onlookers “to believe that unlawful violence would be used".

Howard Riddle, the chief magistrate, said the matter would be elevated to the crown court, adding that Adebowale should stand trial at the Old Bailey, where he will make a bail application on Monday before a pretrial hearing on June 28.

Adebowale, who had been shot by the police after the murder last week, was released from hospital after six days of treatment while the second suspect Michael Adebolajo, is still in hospital.

Police detectives have so far arrested nine people in connection with the murder, from which two have been released without charge.
