Indian Parliament attack convict hanged

New Delhi, Feb 9, IRNA -- Mohammed Afzal Guru, convicted of involvement in the audacious attack on Indian Parliament in 2001, was hanged on Saturday and buried in Delhi's Tihar Jail, six days after a mercy plea was rejected by the President.

43-year-old Guru, a medical college drop out and resident of Sopore in North Kashmir, was executed at 08:00 IST (Indian Standard Time) and buried in the prison premises in a secret operation.

On the death row for over 10 years after conviction for his role in aiding and abetting the attack, a special court had sentenced Guru to death in December 2002 which was upheld by the Supreme Court on August 4, 2005.

The body of Guru, who was found guilty of conspiring and sheltering the militants who attacked Parliament on December 13, 2001 in which nine people were killed, was buried in the prison premises as per the jail manual.

On December 13, 2001, five heavily-armed gunmen stormed the Parliament complex and opened indiscriminate fire, killing nine persons. They included five Delhi Police personnel, a woman Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) official, two Parliament watch and ward staff and a gardener. A journalist, who was injured, died later. All five terrorists were shot dead.

Apprehending possible backlash, an indefinite curfew was clamped in the Kashmir Valley and security beefed up. Jammu and Kashmir Minister Omar Abdullah, DGP Ashok Prasad and other senior officers flew from Jammu to Srinagar early this morning to keep a close watch on the law and order situation.

'Afzal Guru was hanged today morning,' Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde told reporters shortly after the execution.

Guru, who was arrested within hours after the attack from a busin the national capital, is the second Kashmiri militant who has been hanged after Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) leader Maqbool Bhat who was executed on february 11, 1984.

Meanwhile, a tight security was in place across the city today to ensure that no untoward incident take place in the wake of hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.

All the police stations in the city were put on high alert, pti reported quoting police sources as said.

Additional deployment of forces has been made in minority dominated areas across the city, they said.

Patrolling is being intensified in crowded market areas, railway stations and bus terminals as part of efforts to tighten security.

Moreover, mobile internet services in the Kashmir Valley were today snapped following the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru amid apprehensions of a backlash.

All the mobile internet connections stopped functioning this morning as the news about hanging of Guru broke out.
