FAA May Review Rules on In-Flight Use of Electronic Devices
14:38 29/08/2012 MOSCOW, August 29 (RIA Novosti) - The U.S. Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) said in a statement that it might soften its rules for the in-flight use of portable electronic devices.
Most air carriers ask passengers to switch off their mobile phones during flight and to avoid using electronic devices during takeoff and landing. Such measures were introduced to rule out the small possibility of radio frequency interference from portable electronic devices.
“We’re looking for information to help air carriers and operators decide if they can allow more widespread use of electronic devices in today’s aircraft,” said FAA’s Acting Administrator Michael Huerta. “We also want solid safety data to make sure tomorrow’s aircraft designs are protected from interference.”
In the coming months the FAA will create a joint government-industry group, bringing together the mobile technology and aviation manufacturing industries, pilot and flight attendant groups, airlines, and passenger associations.
Within six months the group will draft a set of new recommendations on the use of portable electronic devices during various phases of flight.
The group, however, will not consider the airborne use of cell phones for voice communications during flight.
