Bali Bomb Maker Sentenced To 20 Years In Jail

June 21, 2012

A court in Indonesia has sentenced one of the alleged key figures in the 2002 Bali bomb attack to 20 years in jail.

Umar Patek was convicted for his role in assembling explosives for the double suicide attacks that killed more than 200 people.

He was also sentenced for involvement in a Jakarta church attack in 2000 that killed 19 people.

Patek testified that he played a minor role in assembling the explosives for the Bali bombing and claimed he was against the attack.

Prosecutors were seeking a life sentence -- sparing Patek the maximum penalty of death by firing squad as he has shown remorse during the trial.

Indonesia executed three men in 2008 for playing major roles in the attack on a bar and a nightclub in Bali.
