Kazakhstan Border Post Massacre Survivor Arrested
11:29 05/06/2012 ASTANA, June 5 (RIA Novosti) - The sole survivor, of a massacre in which 14 border guards died in Kazakhstan last week, has been arrested in possession of his commander's gun, Kazakhstan's Interior Minister, Kalmukhanbek Kasymov, said on Tuesday.
The incident took place on Kazakhstan's southwestern border on May 30. The bodies of fourteen border guards and a local man were found in a burned-out building, which was initially thought to have been destroyed following an armed attack, or an incident between those who died.
"Yesterday evening, the fifteenth border guard involved was arrested in a winter hut," Kasymov said. "He was dressed in civilian clothes, and made a statement. His evidence is now being checked. I cannot say more due to the ongoing investigation," he added.
The former border guard was on duty on the day of the incident and was discovered with his commander's firearm, Kasymov said.
Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbayev described the incident as a terrorist act, and said he had set up a special commission to investigate it.
The case is under investigation by the chief military prosecutor with the assistance of the interior ministry and general prosecutor's office.
