Russian Customs Seize Iran-Bound Radioactive Material
December 16, 2011
The Russian customs service says it has seized radioactive material in the luggage of a passenger bound for Tehran at a Moscow airport.
The customs service said its agents seized the material at Sheremetyevo airport on December 16 after a radiation alarm was triggered.
Tests showed the material contained Sodium-22, an isotope that could only be produced at a nuclear reactor.
A criminal investigation has been opened.
No information was immediately available on the identity of the passenger carrying the materials.
