Norway killer Breivik insane, unfit for trial
16:47 29/11/2011 MOSCOW, November 29 (RIA Novosti) - Anders Breivik, the man accused of killing 77 people in Norway last summer, is insane and can not stand trial, according to a court-ordered psychiatric evaluation announced on Tuesday.
Breivik has confessed to killing eight people with a car bomb in downtown Oslo on July 22 and then gunning down 69 others on the island of Utoya, which was hosting a summer camp for the governing Labor Party's youth branch.
The conclusion was made after 13 interviews with Breivik. According to Norwegian newspaper VG, he will be detained indefinitely at a psychiatric hospital.
Prosecutor Svein Holden said Breivik should be sent for treatment to a psychiatric facility and is likely to avoid prison.
“The conclusion is ... that he is insane,” Holden said at a news conference. “He lives in his own delusional universe and his thoughts and acts are governed by this universe.”
If he were declared sane, Breivik would face a maximum jail term of 21 years.
