Britain's Prime Minister Vows To Quell Rioting
August 10, 2011
British Prime Minister David Cameron says his government will put an end to continued violence after four nights of rioting.
"This continued violence is simply not acceptable and it will be stopped," Cameron said. "We will not put up with this in our country. We will not allow a culture of fear to exist on our streets."
The rioting, which saw looting and fires in several British cities and towns, is the worst in Britain in nearly 30 years.
Cameron, in a televised statement, said every action necessary would be taken to restore order on the streets.
He said water cannon -- never before used on the British mainland -- would be made available to police.
In London, where thousands of extra police were deployed, the situation was largely calm overnight, but rioting flared in other cities, including Marchester and Birmingham.
Police said three men died in Birmingham after being hit by a car during rioting. Reports said the three Asian men had been protecting property in their neighborhoods.
Hundreds of people have been arrested since the rioting began on August 6, including nearly 800 in London alone.
Officials blame the rioting on criminality.
