Taipei, May 3 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou has instructed the relevant government agencies to closely monitor the international situation following the death of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and is urging the Taiwan public not to worry about national security, a government spokesman said Tuesday.
Relaying a statement by Ma, Presidential Office spokesman Lo Chih-chiang said all relevant government agencies will keep close track of developments in the wake of bin Laden's death and will respond to any security concerns.
The U.S. announced Monday that its troops had shot bin Laden dead in Pakistan after a 10-year hunt.
Since then, Taiwan has raised the level of its anti-terrorism security checks at airports and seaports and in expatriate communities, Lo quoted the president as saying.
The president also asked the public not to worry as the government is fully prepared to protect the people and security of the country, Lo added.
The statement came after U.S. President Barack Obama announced at the White House earlier Monday that bin Laden, the mastermind behind the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks that led the United States into wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, had been killed at a hideout in Pakistan in a firefight with a small team of American soldiers.
