Egyptian Man Gets Death Sentence for Killing Christians

VOA News 16 January 2011

A court in southern Egypt has sentenced a Muslim man to death for his role in the killing one year ago of six Coptic Christians and a Muslim policeman.

The man, Mohamed Ahmed Hussein, is one of three charged in the drive-by shooting that occurred January 6, 2010, in the Egyptian town of Nagaa Hammadi. The other two are to be sentenced next month.

The six had just attended a Coptic Christmas Mass when they were killed.

The verdict, announced Sunday, follows by two weeks another attack in Egypt against Coptic Christians. A suicide bomber killed 21 people outside a church in the port city of Alexandria after a New Year's eve Mass.

Some information for this report was provided by AP, AFP and Reuters.
