Britain Discloses AQAP Member Arrest

VOA News 03 November 2010

Home Secretary Theresa May said Wednesday that security forces in Britain had arrested a member of al Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula on suspicion of planning a terrorist attack.

May said the arrest was carried out earlier this year.

The announcement came during a speech on terrorism that May gave to the Royal United Services Institute in Britain.

Al Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula is the militant Islamic organization based in Yemen believed to be behind a plot to mail bombs in cargo planes from Yemen to the United States.

One of the bombs was found in a British airport, the second was discovered in Dubai.

Earlier this week, May announced new security measures on cargo being transferred through Britain.

Some information for this report was provided by AP and Reuters.
