Greek Police Intercept Parcel Bombs
VOA News 02 November 2010
Police on Tuesday said five letter bombs had been sent to Western Embassies in the Greek capital of Athens. A total of nine small bombs have been found in two days.
Two parcel bombs went off outside the Swiss and Russian embassies. No one was injured in the attacks.
Police destroyed another three bombs destined for the embassies of Bulgaria, Germany and Chile.
The attacks are thought to be the work of Greek anarchists.
Authorities on Monday found four bombs, including a letter bomb addressed to French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
Authorities on Monday arrested two men linked to the attacks. One of the detainees is a suspected member of a Greek leftist guerrilla group.
Police say they have found no links between the suspects and a recently discovered Yemen-based bomb plot linked to al-Qaida.
Several of the bombs found Monday were destined for Western embassies in Athens.
One of the bombs, addressed to the Mexican Embassy, slightly injured a woman working in a private mail delivery company, when a package exploded in her hands.
The parcel bomb campaign comes ahead of local elections set for Sunday - the first such polls since Greek lawmakers approved a series of severe government spending cuts earlier this year. Those budget cuts, mandated by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund, sparked a string of labor and student protests in Athens.
