First ex-Guantanamo detainee arrives in Germany
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Berlin, Sept 16, IRNA -- A former detainee of the notorious Guantanamo Bay US prison camp arrived in Hamburg Thursday, the first of two inmates to be accepted by Germany, according to interior ministry officials.
The 34-year-old Palestinian man, identified only as Ayman Mohammed Ahmad S., was transferred to a Hamburg hospital for an extensive medical check-up.
No further details were provided by the ministry.
Ahmad S. has reportedly been languishing at Guantanamo since January 2002.
Berlin had given green light to taking in two Guantanamo detainees amid US President Barack Obama's efforts to shut down the infamous detention center which still houses more than 180 inmates.
The Obama administration has struggled to relocate detainees deemed to no longer pose a threat to American interests.
Few of its foreign allies have been willing to accept them and there is strong opposition within America to having them on US territory.
