EADS Defence & Security reveals how TETRA networks can be more economical without compromising reliability and availability
* The cost of reliable radio communications can be driven down thanks to advanced IP connectivity
* Two completely new capabilities developed to maximise flexibility and resiliency of networks
Singapore, 27 May 2010
At the annual TETRA World Congress held in Singapore, EADS Defence & Security unveiled its roadmap for ever more cost-efficient TETRA radio communication systems.
According to the roadmap, the TETRA radio communication systems by EADS Defence & Security will continue to benefit from their current, advanced network architecture and easy-to-manage, reliable network elements. In addition, they will take advantage of cost-effective transmission technologies. The systems are also ready for fast data services, which makes them future-proof.
For network operators and owners, the roadmap ensures lower operational costs, particularly through the deployment of IP based transmission. Because IP connectivity is integrated throughout the core network and even the Command and Control room solution, no new TETRA elements will be needed, and the operating costs will be lower than in a comparable network containing a large number of elements.
The roadmap relies on products that are currently in delivery: the core DXT3® switch, TB3 base stations, and other network elements.
Two completely new capabilities stand out. Firstly, the core DXT3 switch supports both IP and E1 connections, and a DXT3-based network can even feature simultaneous IP and E1 connectivity. This is a new capability, available only in EADS' TETRA networks. Secondly, the upcoming TB3 series base stations have a unique dual homing capability: they can be connected to two switches at the same time. This way, the base station can survive a loss of connection to one of the switches.
"Reliability is the single most essential characteristic of a TETRA system in public safety and critical use," says Dirk Borchardt, Head of Security & Communication Solutions at EADS Defence & Security. "For example, the TB3 series base stations are completely redundant, and even the loss of a unit in the base station will not decrease base station capacity. In addition, the IP based transmission allows for advanced and flexible redundancy and disaster recovery schemes," Borchardt concludes.
EADS Defence & Security is one of the leading vendors of TETRA networks and has developed IP for TETRA for its solution to bring operators the very best cost benefits, allowing them to offer their subscribers more while spending less on their operations.
