EADS Defence and Security introduces a new TETRA handheld radio: THR8

* Dedicated for the 800 MHz frequency band markets
* New Lifeguard feature provides enhanced user safety

26 May 2010

EADS Defence and Security today introduces the THR8, a new TETRA handheld addressing especially the Asian markets. The new THR8 radio brings many advantages to the TETRA users operating on 800 MHz frequency band. Its robust design conform to IP55, large display, superior operation time and new innovative features make an ideal field communication tool for users in public safety, utility, transport and industry. The THR8 provides equal, unparalleled ease of use as the other radios in the EADS range, with Chinese and Korean user interface and voice feedback.

The priority in the design of the THR8 is to deliver performance and usability in mission-critical voice and data communication. The new Lifeguard feature recognises if the radio stops moving, or remains horizontal for a certain period which might mean that the user is injured or has fallen down. In that case the radio triggers an automatic alarm and sends its coordinates to a predefined destination.

The unique “Where are you?” feature shows the distance and direction of a caller’s radio on the receiving radio’s display and also allows saving of the caller's position as a waypoint for later reference. By activating Waypoint Guidance later, the radio can then show the direction and distance to the selected landmark.

The compact THR8 comes with a wide range of audio accessories, various chargers and a car kit with an automatic connection to an external antenna. The THR8 has a high capacity battery offering as high as 3020 mAh performance, ensuring that the device will be ready for a longlasting operation even under the most intensive use. This excellent battery performance is completed by an easy and reliable battery connection mechanism and two battery options.

The JavaTM platform of the THR8 enables loading of organisation-specific applications to the radio, providing the users with enhanced mobility and efficiency as they can use their TETRA radio to receive job assignments, query databases or create reports, for example. The large colour display makes all of these operations considerably easy.

Deliveries of the THR8 are planned to start in 3rd quarter of 2010.
