Pakistan to cooperate in NY's Times Square car bomb plot

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Islamabad, May 5 , IRNA -- Pakistan will cooperate with the US authorities in the investigation into the attempted car bomb attack in New York City, the Foreign Ministry spokesman Abdul Basit said Tuesday.

Reports quoted American officials as saying that a Pakistani man believed to be behind a failed car bomb attack in New York was arrested on Tuesday while trying to leave the U.S.

The suspect, Faisal Shahzad, was being held in New York after he was identified by customs staff at John F Kennedy International Airport.

Basit said that Pakistan has a counter-terrorism mechanism with the United States and Pakistan will fully cooperate with the American investigators.

The arrest follows reports that police had discovered the identity of a man who bought the car used in the plot.

The vehicle was left in New York's Times Square on Saturday with a bomb made from fertiliser, fireworks, petrol and propane gas tanks.

The bomb was discovered and dismantled before it could explode.

“If needed Pakistan will cooperate fully with the U.S. as terrorism is a global phenomena,” the Foreign Ministry spokesman told Geo television.

“The investigation is on initial stage and we still await more details,” Basit said.

Local TV channels have reported that the U.S. ambassador to Pakistan also met Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi in Islamabad and discussed the issue.

The U.S. ambassador sought Pakistan’s help in the investigation into the failed terrorist attempt, according to reports.
