Pakistan Vows Cooperation Over Times Square Bomb Investigation

VOA News
04 May 2010

Pakistani officials say they will cooperate fully with the United States in the investigation of a Pakistani American arrested in connection with the failed car bombing in New York City's Times Square.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik said Tuesday that Pakistan will work with the U.S. but the government had not yet been formally asked for help in the probe. Pakistan's foreign office says it is awaiting more information from the U.S. about the suspect, Faisal Shahzad.

The 30-year-old was detained late Monday as he was waiting to take off on a jetliner to Dubai. Shahzad was born in Pakistan and officials say he became a naturalized U.S. citizen last year.

Law enforcement officials say Shahzad had recently returned from a five-month trip to Pakistan.

A former neighbor of Shahzad in the northeastern U.S. state of Connecticut told reporters he lived in the town of Shelton with his wife and two young children until last year.

Law enforcement officials are looking into whether Shahzad had any foreign connections who may have participated in Saturday's failed bombing attempt in New York City.

The Pakistani branch of the Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack, but police in New York said Monday there was no evidence to support that claim.
