Microwave oven causes bomb scare at U.S. marathon

RIA Novosti

11:0003/05/2010 MOSCOW, May 3 (RIA Novosti) - A microwave oven containing what police now say is unlikely to have been an explosive device caused a major bomb scare at the U.S. Pittsburgh Marathon on Sunday, media reports say.

The microwave oven was spotted near a nearby bus station after the marathon's front runners had crossed the finish line.

"Based on...the preliminary findings of the bomb techs, we don't believe there were any explosive materials," acting police Cmdr. Kevin Kraus said, as quoted by U.S. media.

He did not reveal what exactly was inside the oven.

The bomb scare comes as the U.S. remains on alert for possible terrorist acts following the discovery of a car full of explosives in New York's Time Square.
