IAI and Global Vectra to Showcase Lightweight Day/Night Surveillance System on Helicopter at DEFEXPO 2010
Feb 15, 2010
Israel Aerospace Industries' (IAI) Tamam Division of the Systems, Missiles, and Space Group, and Vectra Engineering Materials Pvt Ltd have installed the IAI-made Plug-In Optronic Payload (POP300) on an EC-135 helicopter. A modular, lightweight, gyro-stabilized day/night observation system, the POP300 can be utilized for civil missions related to law enforcement and homeland security. The product is promoted in India by IAI's technology partner, Nova Integrated Systems Limited. The helicopter with the POP300 installed will be displayed at DEFEXPO India 2010.
The POP300 includes a high performance Focal Plane Array thermal imager (infrared), a color CCD TV camera, automatic video tracking, and a laser pointer for surveillance by day and night.
The EC-135 is a lightweight (3 ton) twin engine helicopter manufactured by Eurocopter, and has the largest share in the world in the light twin engine category. This force multiplier will soon be available for civil missions related to law enforcement and homeland security.
The POP300 is based on a unique, plug-in slice concept. The slice contains the optronic sensors, which can be easily replaced in the field within minutes without the need for alignment or adjustment. This slice concept also allows for easy upgrades whenever new sensor slices are introduced. A single observer, using a hand control unit and a video monitor, operates the system. An onboard mapping system can also be installed on the helicopter, along with a digital recorder and a video data link. The system's electronics are contained within the POP300 turret, thus allowing for easy mounting and maintenance. Installation on the helicopter is performed with the standard dovetail mount. The total weight of the system is less than 16 Kg (35 lb). IAI Tamam's POP300 has been in use with approximately one hundred defense and law enforcement agencies around the world.
