U.K. police expect Mumbai-style terror attack on London - media
LONDON, December 20 (RIA Novosti) - The British police have warned businesses in London to expect a Mumbai-style terrorist attack on the capital, The Times reported on Sunday.
"Mumbai is coming to London," the paper quoted a senior detective from the Metropolitan police counter-terrorism command as saying.
In November 2008, a "commando-style" raid by 10 gunmen on hotels and cafes in the Indian city of Mumbai killed 174 people and injured more than 300 over three days, the paper said.
According to the paper, the detective said at a briefing in London 12 days ago that companies should anticipate a shooting and hostage-taking raid "involving a small number of gunmen with handguns and improvised explosive devices".
A terrorist cell may be preparing an attack on London early next year, the paper said, referring to a police assessment.
According to the paper, security sources said concerns had been raised by "chatter" on a prominent jihadist website two weeks ago.
The Metropolitan police issued the warning on a possible terrorist attack through its network of "security forums", which supply business leaders, local government and the emergency services with counter-terrorism advice, the paper said.
