A PVP SUITABLE FOR LAW AND ORDER MISSIONS
Marolles – 21 November 2009
On the occasion of the 2010 Milipol Show, Panhard is offering a law and order enforcement version of the PVP based on the protected liaison vehicle used by the French Army. This PVP retains all the qualities of the vehicle designed for the army and integrates a law and order maintenance kit to carry out a wide range of security missions : Surveillance, crowd control, intervention or even VIP transport.
The PVP is equipped with a Chou-K multi-grenade launcher, capable of launching nonlethal ammunition more than two hundred metres. This system is implemented very simply from the vehicle’s roof hatch. The PVP ensures its own protection via tear gas dispensers located on each corner of the vehicle and operated from the dashboard. Therefore, the vehicle can get away if attacked by a hostile crowd. Inside the law and order enforcement PVP, there are places to store ammunition for the different systems, allowing crews to carry out prolonged missions.
To complete the equipment, the law and order maintenance PVP is fitted with a bull bar, a searchlight operated from inside the vehicle and the appropriate means of communication and command.
One of the qualities of the PVP is its roomy interior. The architecture has been designed to give as much space as possible to the crew. Moreover, the walls are fitted with rails which can be used to install equipment or change the configuration of the vehicle. With a payload of up to one tonne, the PVP can carry four equipped crew members. Several versions are already in service to meet the specific needs of the Army’s different branches: in addition to the command and antitank versions, the company has brought out versions for the transmissions and artillery corps.
Although this is a 5-tonne class of protected vehicle, the size of the PVP makes it much easier to handle in town compared to its competitors. Intended for use in conflict areas, it is very suitable for use in narrow streets. Its powerful motorisation and automatic gearbox also make it easier to drive on rough terrain with good crossing capacity. As tyre pressure can be adjusted from inside the vehicle, its mobility on loose ground is greatly enhanced.
Finally, the PVP has undergone very exhaustive ballistic protection studies and tests. The steel and aluminium armour-plating offers NATO 2 Stanag protection (corresponding to 7.62 mm ammunition) which is rare on vehicles of this tonnage. A great deal of care has been taken to integrate the threat presented by improvised explosive devices. Thanks to this protection, the PVP is very suited to use in theatres of operations.
It should be noted that the French Army ordered 930 PVP for a total of 150 million euro. More than 350 PVP are currently in operational service within the Army. Designed with commercial off-the-shelf components, the PVP is a very competitive vehicle with regards to its rivals. Moreover, the PVP was deployed in Georgia for nearly one year under the colours of the Gendarmerie, within the framework of the European Union’s surveillance mission. Several foreign police forces are interested in the law and order enforcement version of the PVP.
