KIEV, November 10 (RIA Novosti) - A pandemic of flu and respiratory illness has killed 174 people in Ukraine, and reported cases have exceeded 1 million, the health ministry said.

The pandemic was declared in Ukraine in late October at the same time the first confirmed swine flu cases were reported. Sixty-five people have since been confirmed as having the A/H1N1 virus, 14 of them have died of the viral infection.

The ministry said in a news release late on Monday that about 1.3 million people have contracted flu and respiratory illness, including 62,350 in the past 24 hours. Another 52,742 people have been hospitalized, and 334 people are being treated in intensive care.

The western Lvov and Ivano-Frankovsk regions of the ex-Soviet nation of 46 million have been the worst-hit by the pandemic.

The country's foreign minister, Petro Poroshenko, said on Tuesday Ukraine has received about $3 million in foreign aid to fight the pandemic.

"We are grateful to the countries that have helped Ukraine. We have received humanitarian cargoes worth $3 million," Petro Poroshenko said, adding hospitals across the country have been provided with medicines and medical masks.
