Number of swine flu cases in Russia's Krasnoyarsk grows to 53
14:59 19/10/2009 KRASNOYARSK, October 19 (RIA Novosti) - The number of people confirmed as having the H1N1 virus in the Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk has grown up to 53, Russian consumer watchdog Rospotrebnadzor said on Monday.
Last week 22 students at a Krasnoyarsk school were tested for the virus and four were confirmed with the swine flu.
"Over the weekend, doctors diagnosed 64 students as having an acute respiratory viral infection - the A/H1N1 virus was confirmed in 53," the spokesman said.
According to Rospotrebnadzor, a total number of confirmed swine flu cases in the region is 56, with three children having been confirmed with the virus at the end of August.
A number of schools have been temporarily closed and put under quarantine over swine flu fears.
As of Monday, there have been at least 951 confirmed cases of swine flu in Russia, with no reported deaths. Russia's top doctor, Gennady Onishchenko, said on Friday that 562 of Russia's reported cases of the virus involved people who had become infected whilst traveling abroad.
According to the World Health Organization, as of October 11 there had been more than 399,000 laboratory confirmed cases of H1N1 influenza throughout the world, with over 4,735 deaths.
