FSB Says Organizers Of Attack On Ingush President Killed

October 13, 2009

MOSCOW -- The head of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) says the organizers of the June assassination attempt against Ingushetian President Yunus-Bek Yevkurov have been killed, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

FSB Director Aleksandr Bortnikov told journalists on October 13 that two leaders of Islamic insurgent groups in Ingushetia, who were believed to have organized the attack against Yevkurov, were killed during a counterterrorism operation.

He did not give the identity of the two men.

Last month, Ingushetian prosecutor Yury Turygin told a Council of Europe delegation that two other organizers of the attack on the president had been killed within days of the incident.

Yevkurov is a former military officer who was appointed president of the volatile region in the North Caucasus in October 2008 by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

He was severely injured on June 22 when a vehicle with explosives blew up near his motorcade on a highway near the city of Nazran.

Four others, including his driver, were killed in the attack. It took Yevkurov almost two months to recover from his injuries and resume his presidential duties.
