Three suspects arrested for plotting bomb attacks on U.S. soil

RIA Novosti

07:27 25/09/2009 WASHINGTON, September 25 (RIA Novosti) - Three suspects have been arrested in the United States on charges of plotting to set off explosive devices in public places in several U.S. states, the CNN reported.

A new indictment Thursday charged the 24-year-old Afghan-born Colorado resident Najibullah Zazi with conspiracy in an alleged plot to detonate homemade bombs on U.S. soil. Zazi was arrested last week initially on charges that he lied to FBI investigators.

Federal authorities claim that Zazi received detailed bomb-making instructions in Pakistan, bought specific components to make bombs, including hydrogen peroxide and acetone products, and traveled to New York City on September 10 to prepare the explosives and detonate at least one bomb in a public place.

The other arrests that follow the Zazi case are unconnected, the CNN report said.

In Dallas, Texas, the FBI arrested a 19-year-old Jordanian man who was attempting to blow up a 60-story Dallas office tower using a car filled with explosives. He has been charged with attempting "to use a weapon of mass destruction."

The other case involves 29-year-old Michael Finton, a Muslim convert, who was arrested after attempting to blow up a car bomb outside a courthouse in Springfield, Illinois.

According to the FBI, both suspects had been under constant surveillance and were arrested late on Thursday in coordinated sting operations where fake explosives had been supplied to the suspect in each case by an undercover agent.
