The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a vaccine for the H1N1 swine flu virus.
Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced Tuesday that the FDA had approved applications for the vaccine from four drug manufacturers.
She told a House of Representatives committee hearing the government had ordered 195 million doses of the vaccine, which should be available in mid-October.
Sebelius said there should be enough of the vaccine available for everyone who needs it.
The World Health Organization has declared the swine flu outbreak a pandemic.
The health agency says more than 3,000 deaths related to the virus have been reported worldwide and as many as two billion people may eventually be infected.
Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
